The main focus of 3D graphic design is on the form of visual presentation and communication. Thanks to its comprehensible character, it is used frequently and also sought by customers. 3D graphic design emphasises the design quality, but also the maximization of its informative value achieved by either good-quality visualization or 3D animation, which prompts the functional characteristics of the designed object.

The basic principle of 3D design is not much different from the common process of designing on a piece of paper or in 2D programs. The main difference is the fact that the creation process as such is carried out in specialized 3D applications. These applications can be divided into 3D software for an accurate 3D design, which resemble CAD programs with respect to its environment. Their outputs can be directly transferred to the technical design form suitable for further production. 3D applications that are more art-focused and emphasise the appearance and impression are another category. Their disadvantage is they are used for purely informative purposes and require a need to further process the designs for use in the production.

The 3D design area is closely linked to 3D graphics. The designer himself/herself is often a skilled 3D graphic designer and vice versa.
